The organization works in four major areas:
- Land preservation and protection of important habitats
- Education and public outreach about water issues and watershed protection
- Promotion of scientific understanding and monitoring of existing environmental conditions in the region
- Advocacy for land and water protection at local, state, and national levels
We work together to:
- Acquire specific parcels of land and critical habitats, for transfer to public ownership
- Promote and educate about open space planning and preservation generally
- Assist municipal farmland preservation efforts
- Carry out water monitoring programs and training, and conduct projects to resolve problems at stream and lake sites (removal of invasive species, stream bank and forested buffer restoration, and the like)
- Implement management plans for specific preserved properties, on behalf of the New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife
- Provide education about the effects of stormwater runoff from streets, lawns, and fields to residents of all 24 municipalities in Gloucester County through Community Day booths. Also provide stormwater education programs for Planning Boards and municipal employees, in conjunction with the Gloucester County Improvement Authority and its stormwater management consultants.
- Assist in regional planning for protection of clean water
- Develop resource inventories for individual watersheds
- Aid local residents and groups in their efforts to protect land and water resources and important historic and cultural resources
- Conduct programs for individuals and families such as lake and stream walks, canoe trips, storm drain labeling, lectures and workshops, and water festivals
- Prepare and distribute watershed information to teachers and provide classroom presentations in area schools
- Alert members and Gloucester County residents to legislation, problems, and controversies affecting our land and water
